Stand Up!

Young people have the unique power to change the world like no one else. This new anthology celebrates young people as activists and advocates who have let their voices and actions ROCK the causes and issues most important to them.

If you are currently 25 years or younger, we want tostandup cover hear your story, in your own words, about how as a child, teen, or young adult you chose, or are choosing, to STAND UP! and impact a cause or issue important to you. Through this powerful new anthology, which will bring together a collection of today’s most outstanding young activists, we want to help you continue to let your voice be heard and insure that your actions continue to make this planet a better place for all living beings.

Meet Co-creator John Schlimm

john's photoA Harvard-trained educator, John’s ongoing community-based efforts as an activist and advocate include working on behalf of all living beings. He has served as a 20+ year advocate for fitness and healthy lifestyle choices through his extensive work on the Board of Directors for Citizens Against Physical, Sexual & Emotional Abuse (CAPSEA), co-directing the award-winning TEAM STRAUB (an adjunct fundraising arm of Straub Brewery, Inc.), his award-winning work with the American Cancer Society (John was named Best New Volunteer in 2006 for his efforts on behalf of Relay for Life and his team, TEAM STRAUB, was honored with the Mission Possible Award), working as an American Red Cross-certified swimming instructor for more than twenty years, volunteering at the Elk County Humane Society, moderating the Blood, Guts, & Glory Lecture Series on the media, pop culture, politics, and other topics, and various other issues and causes, such as literacy and education.

John is also a visual artist working in various mediums and the award-winning author of numerous books on cooking/entertaining, history, how-to, and fiction.

During his early career, John served in the Vice Presidential Communications Office at The White House where he worked with Second Lady Tipper Gore as well as having worked in production and scriptwriting for the national radio series Enterprising Women, fundraising for various national and local non-profits, as a celebrity publicist at FrontPage Publicity in Nashville, as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and as a promotional writer on behalf of Hollywood and literary superstars and some of the country’s most respected brand names. John’s articles and writings have also appeared in various anthologies (including the Chicken Soup for the Soul series), magazines, newspapers, and online news sources.

John graduated Summa Cum Laude from Marymount University with a B.A. in Communications & Public Relations and a minor in Studio Arts, earned his dual Secondary Education Certifications in English and Speech Communications at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and completed his Master’s Degree in Education at Harvard University.
