OPTION 1
A Hybrid Publishing Program

Publishing Syndicate is an independent publisher with a small editing, production and marketing staff. While our goal is to publish as many new authors as possible, we can't possibly publish every book that we believe has the potential for market success. BUT if we see potential in your work, we want to help you get published. For those authors whose titles we are unable to fit into our regular production cycle, but in whose work we see value and potential market success, we offer our OPTION 1 program.

Publishing Syndicate’s OPTION 1 program is a hybrid publishing partnership opportunity designed to benefit you, the author, and us, the publisher. OPTION 1 program allows us to publish many more titles each year, wonderful titles we would normally have to pass up. This program significantly increases our chances of finding those best sellers that otherwise would not be discovered. And that best seller could be YOU!

We review every complete book proposal sent to us. Many submissions are refused outright because of poor quality writing, they are a “wrong” book for us, or we feel the manuscript needs far too much editing in order to meet our quality requirements.

Remember: Every submission is considered for our regular publishing program first.

OPTION 1 is NOT like all those other publishers charging $1,000, $2,000, $3,000 and more to publish your book! That's how they make their profit--taking your money, which you will never again see!

For proposals and manuscripts we like and believe will likely be successful, but can’t fit into our regular publishing program, we will offer to publish and make your book available as both a print book and as an e-book. Publishing Syndicate charges a fee of $597 for our OPTION 1 program. BUT you can earn back every penny! (See OPTION 1 Author Royalties, below.)

This minimal fee helps offset our initial costs for 1) editing and proofing, 2) providing an ISBN, 3) creating a cover, 4) formatting your book for the print version, 5) making your printed book available through Amazon and to other bookstores including Barnes & Noble (and available to you for your own personal book sales), 6) formatting your book for several e-book platforms including Kindle, Sony, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, and Diesel, and 7) submitting your e-book to digital book retail outlets.

Publishing Syndicate also markets your printed book and e-book through various online and social networking avenues, traditional book review opportunities and catalogs. But remember, continued marketing of your book will remain your responsibility, as it does with any author/publisher partnership.

OPTION 1 Author Royalties: Publishing Syndicate will pay you—the author—a royalty on each of your books we sell, except those we sell directly to the author at the author's discount. Our contracts include much more detail, but our author royalty is similar to many other publishers (and better than most). Additionally, you, the author, will be able to purchase as many copies of your print book as you like for 50% off the cover price (plus shipping and handling to your location). When 2,500 copies of your book have sold, whether as print book, e-book or a combination, we will pay you a royalty BONUS in the amount of the $597 you initially paid to join OPTION 1 (or the full amount you paid if it was part of a discount special).

OPTION 1 Alternative: If we like your book idea, but believe your manuscript needs much more work than we are willing to pay an editor to fix, consider this: without promising we will sign you to a book contract, we will suggest you hire your own editor or one of Publishing Syndicate’s recommended freelance editors. Plan on paying about 1.5-cents per word to have your manuscript edited. For example, your 50,000-word manuscript will cost about $750 to have edited. It might be less, or even more, depending on its complexity and the amount of work (time) it will take an editor to identify and fix writing and organizational weaknesses. Following the edit, we invite you to resubmit your book proposal and manuscript and we will provide a priority review of your work. If we like the changes we see, we will likely offer you our OPTION 1 book contract.

But wait! We also have two more options to share with you!

OPTION 2:
Author Back-of-the-Room Books

Publishing Syndicate will never pressure you or attempt to talk you into paying thousands of dollars to get your book published. But we do offer you the opportunity, if you’re so inclined.

In reality, OPTION 2 is viable for very few authors. It’s relatively expensive and there’s absolutely no guarantee you will earn your investment back. How’s that for not trying to up-sell you to this program? But, on the other hand, if you have a ready-market for your book, you could become a best-selling author.

OPTION 2 is for those authors who KNOW they can sell lots of books by themselves. Usually they are speakers who teach seminars and classes or speak at conferences, often to hundreds or thousands of people. They are authors who need a “back-of-the-room” book, something they can sign and sell—a book for which seminar and conference attendees will be willing to pay $10, $20 or more because they are caught up in the excitement of the author’s presentation or speech and want more information.

This opportunity is available to authors whose manuscripts meet the high quality standards we insist upon. This is not a POD (print-on-demand) publisher’s offer where you pay thousands of dollars and get only 50 or 100 copies of your book. We work directly with one of the largest book printers in North America. Our minimum print run under this program is 2,000 copies.

Under OPTION 2, the author is responsible for all costs—which are insanely less expensive than POD for 2,000 books—and Publishing Syndicate will manage the project for you. For your investment, we will work with you on a final edit of your completed manuscript, help develop a cover, and complete the e-book and print-book layouts. The layout for print is different and much more complex, exacting and time consuming than the layout for an e-book. You will approve the final edit of your manuscript, the galleys and printer proofs.

Here is a breakdown of a typical project: 2,000 copies of your 256-page, full-color cover, 6” x 9” paperback book with minimal graphics will cost you approximately $8,000 (about $4 per copy). For 3,000 copies, add maybe another $750 to your total cost (books now are $2.90 per copy). Note that reprints are typically even less expensive. Also note that costs are higher if you desire hard cover (case bound) or two-color content pages, and especially if you require full-color graphics inside, such as with a fully illustrated cookbook or children’s book. Remember, printing prices fluctuate as often as paper and delivery-truck fuel prices change.

Publishing Syndicate will have the books drop-shipped to your U.S. or Canadian location. We can also make your print book and e-book available via traditional book markets; you will be paid our standard royalty for all units sold.

OPTION 3:
Ghost- or Co-Written Book

Publishing Syndicate can provide ghost- or co-written book services to nearly anyone for most projects, but it is expensive. This publishing program is for you if you have a great nonfiction book idea (often a bio, inspirational or how-to), you are a well-known public figure or have a ready market for your book and you need a ghost- or co-writer to do the actual writing.  We have written for many high-level clients, including CEOs and founders of Fortune 100 and 500 companies, a former U.S. President and several California governors and high-ranking officials.
